Pieces of Her: Book Review

By: Karin Slaughter

Andrea is a thirty-one-year-old woman who returns home to help her mother recover from breast cancer. She remains living in the apartment above her mother’s garage even after her mother recovers. On Andy’s birthday she meets her mother at the mall in order to have a birthday meal.  What no one ever expected was for gunman to open fire. Andrea’s mother, Laura, handles the situation in such a way that had everyone asking questions about her past.

When more incidents happen. Andrea is sent on a trip that makes her aware that she never really knew her mother at all. Secrets that have been long buried are brought to light. Laura is not who everyone believes her to be. This story is full of revelations great and small and how one woman takes a journey to find out who she is and where she comes from.

This was a really good book.  It alternates between 2018 and back in the 1980’s when Laura was young.  It is a journey and keeps you entertained until the end. Andrea has faith in her mother, but that faith and trust is tested. I would recommend this if you enjoy a good suspense. There are topics of rape, AIDS and domestic violence within the story.  I would not recommend it if you are sensitive to these topics. Otherwise, a really good suspenseful storyline.
