His Risk: Book Review

“His Risk” By: Shelley Shepard Gray

This book is set in Hart County and follows a former Amishman, Calvin Fisher.   Calvin receives a call from his sister-in-law informing him that his older brother Mark has kidney cancer.  Calvin has made a lot of bad choices in his life. He is currently working as an undercover DEA agent to make up for some of the things he has done.  However, no one, not even his brother is aware of his ties to the DEA.  He returns to his hometown to help his brother recover after kidney surgery and to be there for Mark as he goes through this trial.

Alice, an Amish woman, is housesitting for her brother while he is on vacation.  The house is across the street from Marks home and Alice and Calvin build a relationship. While in Hart county, his undercover work invades his hometown. Calvin struggles with his family’s perception of him and his growing feelings for Alice.

I really enjoyed the characters in this story. As you read the story, they feel like they come alive and you can clearly see them in your mind.  The character descriptions and insecurities really make the story something special.  I enjoyed the way they combined the Amish aspect along with the English world. It makes the Amish people feel like people and it gives them a humanity that you do not always feel with other books that include Amish country. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves a sweet romance.  It was endearing and well written.

There are areas of the book that discuss childhood abuse and the repercussions.  Some of the characters have pasts that are not noble.
